Words with Friends now a Facebook game

When Facebook gaming giant Zynga bought Newtoy and rebranded it as Zynga with Friends, it was only a matter of time until games from the "with Friends" franchise started popping up on Facebook. Sure enough, Words with Friends is now playable on Facebook as of a couple weeks ago. The game's interface is basically identical to the iOS games, so if you're already familiar with those, you won't need to adapt much to the Facebook game.

The coolest feature by far is the game's integration with the mobile versions. Playing the browser-based version will sync game progress to Words with Friends on iPhone and iPad pretty much instantaneously if you have the app synced up with your Facebook account. You can start a game on Facebook, then pick it up later in the iPad app. It's all very easy to set up.

Words with Friends on iPad has almost exactly the same interface

Unlike many other Facebook games, Words with Friends does not appear to require Flash, which is a definite bonus if you're playing the game on a MacBook. My wife is a Zuma addict, and I can always tell when she's playing because it sounds like she's got a jet engine in her lap. Words with Friends doesn't spin up the fans at all, and it runs quite smoothly on her Mac.

Words with Friends is free to play on Facebook, and there are free versions the iOS apps, including the HD version for the iPad. So if you've been curious to try the game, now's your chance to get in on the fun.

Adobe shuts down InMarket, AIR Marketplace

Did you know Adobe had its own app stores? There's a good chance you didn't, and that's probably one factor in Adobe shutting down both InMarket and AIR Marketplace. Both stores will go offline after August 31, 2011.

"After reviewing our efforts and based on feedback from developers, we have decided that we will deliver the most value by helping developers author and publish their apps on multiple platforms," Adobe says. "There are now several app stores on desktops, mobile devices and tablets that service AIR developers including Apple App Store, Android Market, BlackBerry App World, Intel AppUp center, Samsung Apps, and Toshiba App Place. We encourage you to use these newer popular app stores to distribute your applications."

A lot of Adobe's mobile focus lately has been on "write once, publish anywhere" software for app developers who want to push their products to multiple platforms simultaneously. Given that shift in focus and the fact that the huge popularity of competing stores has vastly overshadowed Adobe's own online marketplaces, it's not surprising Adobe has chosen to shutter these stores.

What is surprising (and refreshing) is Adobe's not necessarily blaming these other stores for shutting down its own, and it's instead positioning this move as what will be of greatest benefit to app developers. That's a far more mature take on the situation than the "Go screw yourself, Apple" Adobe might have hoisted last year.

Meanwhile, developers who have published their apps to InMarket or AIR Marketplace should start looking for new online homes, if they haven't already.

Playstation Vita?s Social And Online Modes Officially Detailed

We heard about the Playstation Vita's online capabilities long before we even knew its name, but the official details are just now solidifying. We knew it would have a net-connected staging area for each game, and a proximity-based social tool (LiveArea and Near respectively), and although some of the functions there are intact, they've been tweaked a bit and the features have changed.

BlackBerry PlayBook update brings zip extraction, more storage options for attachments (updated)

RIM sure is working fast to bring its 500,000-strong BlackBerry Playbooks up to functional par. The tablet's been on the market for three short months and is already set to receive its fourth software update. This go 'round, RIM added the ability to save attachments to a removable SD card or your phone's internal storage, extract zip files from email (although you'll have to use Bridge and port from your BlackBerry smartphone), a pinch-to-zoom feature for video viewing and -- winner of the duh award -- portrait viewing for photos. Also, the software now supports 15 additional languages -- great news if you speak Galician. If you're planning on picking up this QNX tab, you'll receive the v1.0.7 update as part of the setup process. Current owners can wait for an update notification, or just pull it manually. So, what are you waiting for? Get downloading.

Update: And it's gone. Seems some folks who downloaded the update were having connectivity issues using BlackBerry Bridge. RIM posted on Twitter saying users should expect a fix later this week.
